This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our cheer program is home to the Seward Park Varsity Cheer Team and the New Design Knights JV Team. Both teams welcome diverse groups of individuals from the campus and school community. Our Junior Varsity school club team, aims to prepare interested youth in competitive level cheer on the campus Varsity level in the following years. As TEAM (Together Everyone Achieves More) sports, there is emphasis placed on learning to improve one’s self for the good of the whole. Our primary responsibility is to increase prosocial behavior by supporting our school's JV and varsity basketball teams in the Fall & Spring, prepare youth with skills and knowledge for competitive Varsity Cheer, and promoting positive school culture.

As collective groups, we seek to engage in building responsibility, collaborative creativity, meeting/exceeding academic and behavior expectations, being role models for healthy choices, challenge each other to use positive ways to problem solve and seek to empower others to do the same in our community.

Through teamwork, we motivate fan support, foster school spirit, promote teamwork, provide inspiration and enthusiasm, and encourage good sportsmanship at ALL home basketball games/events. We display a positive attitude, pride, accountability and respect within our team school and community.

My Project

In our campus school, we host 5 different schools which means our space and practice resources are limited or non-existent. For 2 years, we have been practicing without cheer mats which puts our team at risk every practice. Often times, we are struggling to find not only practice space, but resources to use to keep us safe during practice. Thanks to our wrestling to this year, we've been able to share 2 of their mats prior to a competition, when wrestling is not utilizing them. We are unable to grow as a team both in numbers and skill level without more community funding and support, leaving us unable to perform certain skills because of safety violations. This limits us from being able to compete on the same level as some of our competitors.

With your help, we are able to bridge the equity gap by providing us resources for safe practices.

Your donations will enable us to have resources of our own, to call our own and gain a sense of pride and worth within our school sports community. We will be able to purchase a few mats to get our team practicing safely, allow us to continue to grow in numbers with a Varsity and JV team, and challenge ourselves to learn new skills.

Additionally, we are looking to help our new JV team members from our NDHS Knight's school team with their uniforms. As we continue to grow a reputation for empowerment and youth development in our school community, more and more youth are interested in joining. We are welcoming 20+ youth to our JV team who will share the practice space with our campus Varsity Team. The NDHS Knights will cheer for the spring basketball team and hope to compete in one local competition.
