Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work in a low-income middle school in Ridgewood, NY. I am an IEP teacher working with students in grades 6-8. The students have various learning abilities and many come from multi-cultural, low-income families. My colleague and I have been moderating an after school program for several years.

My Project

Our program provides the girls with a safe place to explore new friendships and an opportunity to learn more about themselves and others. Having these discussions while making fun crafts sets the girls at ease and enables them to open up. They help each other in areas of strengths and weaknesses. It's wonderful to see girls from different backgrounds come together and produce beautiful objects to take home and remind them of the important things that were discussed. The girls get a chance to put aside their phones and pressures of social media and just enjoy each other.
