My Students

Our school is close to two military bases, and many of my kids are the children of deployed military personnel. Our school is urban and old. 100% of our students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch.

My ESL students represent the very best in America, they try very hard but need additional resources to learn to read and speak English.

My school has a tradition of being a neighborhood school but it is now a school in transition. The stable neighborhood is changing, 18.4% of the families received Supplemental Social Security Income or Public Assistance. Our student population is racially and ethnically diverse. Our district is one of the top ten most multi-cultural districts in the United States. We have students from Somalia, China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Pakistan, as well as Natives from the Alaskan rural areas. About 20% of our student population receives Indian Education, ESL, speech or other special services. All my students deserve a chance but as our school district budget declines, it is difficult to find the money to help them. They need the support of donors.

My Project

I work with nearly 400 students who come to the library every week to learn library skills, work in the maker space, study, read and access the computers. I also work with a group of 5 ESL students who come into the library to use the computers for enrichment. This summer, the computers were relocated to a desktop counter. Unfortunately, the library chairs are too short and my ESL kids cannot reach the keys unless they stand on the chairs. This is a potentially dangerous situation.

Our library serves different grade levels and students need access to the computer keyboards.

My ESL students need 5 inexpensive stools that can be pulled up to the counter so they can comfortably reach the keys to do their searches and word processing. The stools are light weight and adjustable so that all my students can use them.

There is no money in the library budget for furniture so my students need the help of donors. Please help.
