Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
My 650+ students live and study in the Hermosa neighborhood, whose Spanish translation is "beautiful." It's a working-class neighborhood on the northwest side of our city.
I'm lucky enough to be their librarian, meaning I know each and every student in our school.
Our community has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic, which makes the inequities my students face even greater. My students typically have very little in terms of possessions, yet they deserve so much.
My Project
I have just under 700 students who (during more normal times) visit our library once per week to learn information literacy skills, develop their love of reading, learn STEM skills and checkout books! My students are always so excited to bring home a new book, no matter their grade level. I'm requesting a number of nonfiction titles to add to our school library. With new shelving that expanded our nonfiction section, we finally have room to add new books to our collection!
My inquisitive readers love learning about a variety of topics, and I'd love to provide books to expand their knowledge!
As I was browsing Amazon last night, I came across a number of nonfiction titles from the publisher ABDO written by Grace Hansen. We already have a number of ABDO books in our library. The covers of ABDO books are visually appealing and the books I've selected are great resources for students in kindergarten through fourth grade.
My students would love to learn about past presidents like Barack Obama, George Washington, and Abraham Lincoln. They'd also be interested in learning more about some animals we don't have many books on in our library, such as pangolin, arctic hare, water buffalo, emu, mosquitos and jelly fish. My wanderlusters will enjoy learning about Yosemite and Grand Teton National Park. And, my nonfiction fanatics will be interested in learning about farts (yes, farts), haunted houses, fossils and how to make root beer.
