My Students

Kindergarten was once a place where children went to socialize and learn through play experiences. Today's kindergarten looks very different, with the emphasis on academic achievement and very few opportunities for play. For some students, this can lead to boredom and behavior problems.

My students come from a wide range of backgrounds.

Some come to school with vast experiences and background knowledge, while others have had very limited educational experiences before entering kindergarten, and are unprepared for the high expectations of students entering school. However, all of these students combined are what makes my job the best job in the world! These little ones come to school excited and ready learn.

My Project

For the average kindergarten student, it doesn't take much to get them distracted from the task at hand. My students have simple, inexpensive spiral notebooks that serve as their math and writing journals. I print and cut apart the student's math or writing prompt and the students have to simply use their glue stick to attach the prompt to the page in their journals that we are working on.

Sounds easy enough, right?!?

Not for all kindergarten students! This simple task can quickly get students off task. Someone may have difficulty getting the lid off of their glue stick, someone else may have lost the lid to their glue, another's glue has dried up, broken off, or ran out of glue. So many small distractions that can take student's focus on what the math or writing prompt was and cause them to need a few extra minutes to refocus on the task at hand.

With the addition of a thermal label maker, I can simply print the prompt, cut them apart and all the students will have to do it stick it onto their paper. No glue sticks needed at all and much less time wasted so students can get right to work on the math or writing task. (Parents will also thank me for needing fewer replacement glue sticks!)
