My Students

This year I have an eager, energetic bunch of kindergarteners who arrive to school with positive attitudes and enthusiasm for learning. We have been building our reading stamina (almost 8 minutes!) and continue to work on reviewing letter names and sounds, as well as sight words daily.

My school is located in a working-class, inner-city neighborhood of Los Angeles and many of my students come from low-income households.

Many of my students have parents who work multiple jobs and struggle to meet the everyday needs of their children, such as providing regular meals or a consistent bedtime. Many struggle simply to help their children with completing daily homework assignments. Yet, the children are eager to learn and come to school every day with positive attitudes, ready to build on the knowledge they have gained over time.

My Project

So far this year, my students have been working diligently in learning to 'read' their picture books by reading the pictures, reading the words, and retelling the stories. And now they need books that are at their exact reading level. Many of these books include sight words and short words with one or two sentences on each page. As they increase their fluency, they will move to the next reading level, so I am requesting an assortment of books that includes a range of books that will meet the needs of individual students.

Having just-right books is an important part of building students' confidence and success in learning to read.

We have many story books and picture books, but are in need of these just-right books, so your support in helping my students access these books will greatly help them improve their reading skills and hopefully build a lifelong love of reading.
