Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.”Dr. Seuss My 4th grade students deserve just that, to read and learn, so that they may go many places in the future. In order for this to happen, they need to be given the "Just Right" books.

My 4th grade students are a wonderful group of children living in low income.

high crime, community in Los Angeles, California. They are English learners living in this community, trying to make the best of it all. They all have varied needs such as learning disabilities, limited reading skills, and have English language needs. Although, they are faced with difficult challenges to overcome, they continue to be optimistic and motivated to do their best. Thus, THEY deserve the BEST. The best for them includes providing them with differentiated reading instruction. Thus they need books that are at their independent reading levels. This has turned out to be a challenge because they are in 4th grade and are given 4th grade materials, which are books at Guided Reading Levels 0 and above, but they can't access them independently. Therefore, my students need level A-N books. Those are their "Just Right" books. The "Just Right" books that are missing from our classroom.

My Project

We as a school have begun to implement the Reader's Workshop model for teaching reading. One essential component of reader's workshop is having students read books at their independent reading level based on several assessments. My students have demonstrated that their independent levels are below 4th grade. The levels they need are not available to them because they are at the Kindergarten-2nd grade levels. This is why we need "Just Right" books. These books we are requesting are books at their independent reading levels. Having these books would allow them to read independently and feel successful and practice the various strategies being taught. This would then allow them to read more, learn more, and be better equipped to do well as they progress through their school years and be college and career ready. This would then lead them to a higher education and a better future.

Having these "Just Right" books would definitely change my students life for the better.

They would be able to access text, feel successful doing so, and that would increase their self-esteem. Because of this, they would become better readers and better students overall. They would would be much more confident students. We know, that confident students are more motivated and able to do more in school. One can say that Reading = Power. Therefore, they would feel POWERFUL. Can't beat that.
