As a third-year teacher in District 75, New York City's district for students with severe disabilities, I am finally getting the hang of this teaching thing! Thanks to the experience of my first two years, the advice of my colleagues and mentors, and my graduate school literacy courses, I now understand the importance of children reading "just-right" books: books that are not too easy and not too hard. Although my classroom already uses lots of read-alouds, guided reading, and phonetic word work, it is only by reading "just-right" books that my students will be able to advance their independent reading skills. I have witnessed the amazing change in students who always struggled with books that were too difficult for them when they began reading just-right books. All of a sudden, they are confident and enthusiastic about reading! My classroom is filled with colorful, interesting books, but they are all far above my students' reading level. I am requesting a variety of books levels A-F (including sets of books levels A-F from AKJ Educational Services and packs of books levels A-D from Nasco) for my beginning readers so that I may cultivate this confidence and enthusiasm. My biggest goal as a teacher of students with autism is to teach them independence. Literacy is a huge part of this goal--without being able to read, my students may never live a truly independent life. Please help them reach this goal by adding a variety of "just-right" books to our classroom library.
