My Students

I have a full class of happy first graders that are eager to learn. We are busy all day working in small groups, creating, investigating, having fun and making a little bit of a mess.

My students come from all over the world.

They are all very different in their customs, religion, language, and prior school experience. One thing they do have in common is they are all kind and eager to learn. Many of them did not have a rich preschool or kindergarten experience. It is my job to help them catch up so they can enter second grade ready.

My Project

Every day I listen to my students read. Currently we often read black and white paper books that have been copied on a copier. I am hoping to be able to provide my little ones with 'real books' that they can read daily. Once we read them in class, they are able to read them with their families. The requested materials will allow the children and I to assess what level their 'Just Right Books' should be. They need books that are not too easy and not too hard but just right. Being able to self assess and identify their needs will be a skill that benefits them as life long learners. Once they know what their just right books are, my students will be able to read real books with color illustrations. This project provides the students with four copies of over 120 titles. By having multiple copies, the students can participate in partner reading, book clubs and readers theater. They will be eager to get their hands on them and read daily. The more they read, the better readers they become.

This project will add life to my literacy block.

In addition to reading the books, my children will be able to read together, have discussions and complete projects together using them. Children that live in poverty areas and do not read on grade level by the end of third grade have a 35% chance of not graduating from high school. With this project, I would be able to provide them with literacy experiences that will support them in becoming grade level readers.
