Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Stephen King once said that “Books are a uniquely portable magic.” With technology becoming more and more readily available for our students, it's making it harder to keep them engaged with something as simple looking as a book...but I accepted this challenge when I became an ELA teacher. Every year I try to tailor my bookshelves to the interests of my students to encourage them to read for pleasure since class time is spent analyzing literature. I created this project to bridge that divide.

The books that were selected for this project all connect to the theme of oppression and morality, a final unit we have in our curriculum that incorporates reciprocal teaching and literature circles.

These sets will provide students with multiple examples of different groups that have struggled with oppression but have remained resilient in the fight.

I hope that these books will move students the way they've moved me and inspire them to seek further change in our society so that one day we all can truly look at each other as equals.
