My Students

Situated between an urban environment and farmlands, our high school students come from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences, but what connects our community of nearly 1,800 students is a love of reading. Our district values reading choice and encourages independent reading at all levels, all grades.

We are so fortunate to be in a district that places an emphasis on independent reading and student choice.

Books can be mirrors or windows to the stories of our world. My goal is to connect my readers to the books they need.

A love for reading is built one story at a time.

My Project

We are living through history right now. We are not just seeing changes as a result of our current pandemic, but we witnessing much needed shifts and movement and change happening in this country when it comes to our thinking, policies, and actions regarding racism and injustice. Our curriculums and classrooms must reflect these changes. Our curriculums and classrooms must be mirrors and windows for the wide range of voices found within our schools and our world. I teach American Literature. It is especially important that my text selections honor the voices of ALL Americans, not just a select few.

We are hoping to add Bryan Stevenson's memoir Just Mercy to our selection of book club choices in our 10th grade American Literature course this year.

Many of my previous students read this novel this past year as I already have a few copies in my classroom library. The response to this book was overwhelmingly positive. I would love to be able to add more than a handful of copies to our 10th grade classrooms this fall.
