My Students

Greetings. To know middle school students is to love and cherish their unique perspective on the world. There are those who think middle school students should be sent to the woods for a few years and then come back once they are ready to join the rest of us. I feel like that sometimes. Our kids, children from the Ocean Hill - Brownsville section of Brooklyn are just like any other. With the exception that they live in a world of concrete and what "green" areas they have they can't grow or play on because of what pollutants are in the ground. Our students struggle with a number of barriers to coming to school. Attendance can be an issue due to hunger, hygiene or just having clean clothes, let alone materials.

My Project

One of the core tenets of our school is exploration. We experience all of Brooklyn, NYC and the world have to offer. We seek an experience to see this important film as an entire school community together.

Students will travel to a local theater to view the film and then break off into classes for lunch and discussion.

This is an important film and we are excited to offer this to our learners. A black man wrongly accused of murder spends six years on death row before a lawyer with the Equal Justice Initiative gets him exonerated. This is an engaging, important and timely topic for our students.
