My Students

I have the most spunky, creative students on this side of the Mississippi, and there is never a dull moment in my classroom. Three of the courses I teach are composition classes, which are writing intensive. My student's joke that after completing one of my writing courses, they have the stamina to each write their own novel. I have high expectations, but my students always exceed them (and we have a lot of fun, too).

My Project

Angry and hopeful. Those are the two emotions I had while read Bryan Stevenson's Just Mercy, now a major motion picture. Most of the text tells the story of Walter McMillian, a man wrongly accused of murder in the 1980s. Despite there being a plethora of evidence proving McMillian's innocence, he spent six years on death row before he was released in 1993. While telling McMillian's story, Stevenson weaves in antecdotes detailing his own experiences with racism and injustice, along with the tales of others wrongly incarcerated.

What struck me the most were the stories of the children - 13 and 14 years old - tried and sentenced as adults and then shipped off to adult prisons for the rest of their lives.

Imagine being 13 years old and being told that you are unfit to be a part of society.

This moving and thought-provoking text is a necessity for my classroom. I plan to have students read and study the introduction next semester, but I want to have full copies of the book available for students who would like to read all of McMillian's story, learn about the others wrongly incarcerated, and discover the work Stevenson is doing to help enact change in our legal system.
