Our school is a wonderful and amazing place to be! The students enter school every day eager and ready to learn. They have a wonderful and natural curiosity about the world. The students are each unique learners, but each one has many special gifts to offer to the world. The students come from diverse backgrounds with a variety of languages and cultures. What makes us special is our strong sense of community.
We work together to create a classroom culture that fosters creativity, hard work, acceptance and celebrations of both successes and failures as an important part of learning.
Each day, I am fascinated by their drive and the ways they continually find to support each other! They work and learn through play and conversation, as well as through their written work.
My Project
This project is for 10 copies of the book Just Mercy for our equity team to complete a book study. We have continued to meet throughout the summer and recently completed a book to examine our biases.
Just Mercy is an excellent book, which will enable our teachers to examine the criminal justice system through another lens.
I have read this book and see it as an excellent opportunity to lead the staff in deep and though provoking conversations. This story is full of specific examples of systemic racism and illustrates the school to prison pipeline. Reading it will help us to understand teach our students better and use equity as our lens as we design lessons, communicate with families and educate our students. This will help us be better at serving ALL of our students each and every day.
It will likely challenge thinking for many of us. However, our role as public school educators means we must dive deep into learning and action for our students. The time to do this is now. Thanks for your consideration of this project!
