Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have a 12:1:1 special education class with disabilities that vary from the emotionally disturbed, physical or learning disabilities, to those on the autism spectrum. My school is located in the middle of Bushwick where parents are struggling economically and now with the increase of rent in the neighborhood their life has become a little more problematic. Some of these problems come from not finding affordable housing and living in shelters to not having the resources at home to learn necessary skills. Some come to school with no book bag, notebooks, or pencils because it was simply too expensive for the parents to purchase.

My students are in danger of being overlooked and not being helped because they can't learn in the traditional way and don't have the means to buy the necessary supplies.

I refuse to believe they can't learn. It is my belief that every child has an ideal way of learning and we just have to find the best way for them.

My Project

Every year, I watch my students struggle with limited supplies and even more limited technology in this ever growing tech world. I see many parents worry about getting basic supplies for the start of school and I see my students stress out about not being able to do certain things in class. I watch as my students struggle to grasp new concepts. I see the learning pace for my 12 students vary so much but yet they are expected to excel and learn at the same pace. If I can provide them with tools to grasp these new skills and reach the success that I know they can, it can change their perspective. I want my students struggling in math to be able to practice each skill by making it fun with a computer game. Assist them with reading by using high interest topic cards and Scholastic News that they can enjoy as well as keep for their own library.

I don't want any of my students to worry that they are missing anything and I want that from the beginning.
