Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a firm believer that every child needs something different to learn; there is no one-size-fits-all method for learning.

"Sitting still is overrated.

It makes sense for the opera or for meditating, but in most classrooms and childcare centers, it's given far more honor than it deserves. Children need to move." ~Tom Hunter, National Association for the Education of Young Children.

In my classroom, students are seen as individuals. My goal is to give children a variety of choices regarding where to sit, opportunities to take brain breaks, and move to ensure self-regulation while increasing focus. Sensory input plays a huge role in our ability to learn. Research has proven if our bodies are over-stimulated or understimulated we can't learn because we are too distracted and/or do not have enough input to stay on task.

"Feeding" our sensory system can be done by allowing opportunities for movement in the classroom. Half of my students have sensory diets, physical movement plans that help regulate their sensory systems, making them capable of learning and focusing. Last year, we used our trampoline so MUCH that it started to break and we are in desperate need of a new one. The trampoline is essential in our daily sensory diets. When children are tired or having a difficulty sitting, they know they can ask to use the trampoline.

My students have MANY challenges that are beyond their control. Giving them the necessary tools to learn and breaking down existing barriers is vital to continued academic success. Movement and learning are key to success, as proven in many studies.
