My Students

I work with a lovely group of 8-9 year olds in an densely populated urban neighborhood outside of Los Angeles. Our school is located in an area of extreme poverty where 100% of our students qualify for free lunch.

No matter how tough their circumstances, these children are filled with enthusiasm and joy.

They are eager to learn and see each new lesson as an adventure. One of the great pleasures of my life is coming up with new ways to engage their minds and give them experiences that will help them understand the world around them and find their place in it.

My Project

My students live in a densely populated urban city that is filled to the brim with fast food restaurants, AND has the dubious distinction of having the highest percentage of children suffering from obesity. There are very few public spaces for the children to play in, and even bike riding and skateboarding are curtailed due to a complete lack of safe areas in which to use them. With so much of their lives being sedentary, and with so few safe places for them to play in, I wanted to find a way to give them both new skills and easily found materials that can be used to get them up and moving, even in limited outdoor space.

I suddenly realized that jump ropes are the perfect antidote for our problem!

And, as it turns out, there are all many different sizes and kinds of jump ropes: single jumper, double dutch, even Chinese jump ropes, all of which will keep our PE time engaging and exciting. I am positive these jump ropes will be instrumental in helping us get up, get outside and play. The bluetooth speaker will be the ‘icing on the cake’, adding the extra energy and pizzazz to our jump rope sessions with music.
