Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students have multiple chances to engage in various reading opportunities ranging from in-depth Socratic Seminars, to small group, targeted reading instruction periods and independent reading sessions. They are eager to read but there is one small problem. We have no books! Please help!

Our school is a brand new middle school, housed in a hundred-year-old building on the 5th floor in East New York.

Despite the walk up, kids are excited to be there and excited to improve their reading and writing skills. Although we are a STEAM school, our Wi-Fi cannot support the amount of devices we have therefore making it extremely difficult for our students to read digital books. Lacking the funds (because we are a brand new school) to buy sufficient classroom libraries, we are scrambling to locate books to keep both our struggling readers and avid readers working towards our community wide goal of reading 10,000 books this year. With your support not only will 200 middle schoolers benefit from having actual books to read, you will continue to cultivate their eagerness to explore topics that are relevant to them. You will also help us combat the fact that our school is located in a Book Desert. All of the books selected were selected by our students directly in Reading Seminar.

My Project

Students will read these books independently, in Socratic Seminars and in their small group targeted reading instruction periods. Every child has committed themselves to moving up 2 reading levels this year and reading 50 books. I promise you that these books will be devoured by our kiddos. After reading each book students will recommend their favorites to their classmates through book talks, by writing reviews and sharing them and by reading favorite passages aloud at our annual Book Bash (inspired by Brooklyn's Book Festival). They will write, analyze and shape their viewpoint of the world in which they live by reading through these different novels.

Your donation will greatly impact not just our students, but our community.

We are located in a book desert meaning there are no public libraries nearby or book stores. Most students find it very challenging to get a hold of books to read, let alone books they are interested in. Lacking a school library, it is important that we figure out a way to get classroom libraries in place so our students can maximize all the opportunities they have to read throughout the day and at home!
