Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My fifth-grade students are eager learners with diverse cultural backgrounds. Many of my students are English language learners who bring enthusiasm and curiosity to every task, even the challenging ones. I work with many newcomers to the United States who have endured great obstacles to be here. It humbles me to see how much they value education and how they strive to succeed in a new land, language, and culture.

We perceive diversity as a strength to be harnessed and nurtured.

In my classroom, we often design lessons and activities around an inquiry model, so that all students are exposed to rigor. At the same time, they can access content in meaningful ways.

At our school, we believe that a collaboration of families, teachers, and students is what makes our community resilient. We are always learning and evolving in our practices.

My Project

Before the pandemic, daily writing was an expectation in my class, and every student did it. Now that all of my students are back in school full time, they have to relearn many classroom norms and writing routines. The rigor of writing every day is starting to wear them down, and I have noticed that many are hesitant to put their ideas down on paper for fear of judgment and making mistakes. So many of them are out of practice and insecure about their writing. Consequently, not enough writing is being produced.

Every writer knows that the only way to build stamina and generate the unimpeded flow of ideas is by practicing.

Journaling is the solution! I would like to establish a "free writing day" every week. This way students can learn to express themselves without the burden of academic content. In my years as a writing teacher, I have seen how nothing motivates students more than fancy, eye-catching supplies. The colorful composition notebook journals will get my students started journaling and motivate them to express themselves.
