My Students

How do we make American history come alive for our children? How can we move beyond a set of memorized facts, details, and dates to make history more meaningful and spark student interest? What better way to make history come alive for my students than through hands-on and interactive learning!

I have a culturally and economically diverse group of students, but the commonalities they all share and what I am most proud of is their great hearts and passion for learning.

They treat each other with respect, are sensitive to each others' differences, and appreciate each others' individuality. My students are also inquisitive and so curious about their world. They are information seekers; They ponder over books to find the answers to their questions. Often their answered questions lead to even more questioning and they love to share their findings with others. They are my inspiration! :)

My Project

The American history resource boxes are full of hands-on and interactive learning materials to make history come alive for my students. The boxes cover 5th grade social studies topics on exploration, westward expansion, the American Revolution, U.S. government, and U.S. regions. The primary documents contained in the kits and the teacher resource books will help students to understand each era by reading the writings of people who lived it. Students will also create interactive timelines, maps, and participate in simulation experiences of certain time periods. Other activities include building a compass for our exploration unit, making a sextant, creating a class constitution, and designing a travel brochure for our state study. Students will use the biography cards to study how people of our past helped shape our nation. They will assume the character of a historical figure and bring them to life in an interactive "wax" museum.

My project, Journeying Through American History, will allow my students to investigate the cultural, political, religious, and economic events that formed and impacted this country in an active way.

Abstract concepts will become meaningful to them. History will be their story!
