My Students

I teach at an inner-city, Title I high school in Los Angeles, CA. Our high school is very unique in that we are a medical magnet high school. The leaders in our community created our high school so that more students of color could have a pathway towards medicine and science careers. I teach Geography Honors to my 9th graders and US History Honors to my 11th graders. In both classes, I use a thematic approach, guided by essential questions. I strive to teach meaningful, culturally relevant and rigorous content to my students. We read, analyze, write and dialogue. One of my main goals as an educator is for my students to feel empowered by their knowledge and education.

Although my students face many challenges outside the classroom, my students are motivated, eager to learn and most of all, resilient.

My class pushes and challenges my students, and they more than meet my expectations. It is only fair to my students that I further develop myself as their teacher and as an educator.

My Project

My students deserve a high-quality education. I believe that starts with me being the best teacher I can be. In order to accomplish this, I'd like to earn my National Board Certification. This is the most respected professional certification that I can achieve for myself and my students. Harvard's SDP study concluded that students with National Board Certified teachers in my district learn more and National Board Certified teachers outperform other teachers overall.

The year-long, four component journey will help me identify, implement and reflect on my teaching practices.

I will be required to take a content knowledge assessment, differentiate instruction, teach my lessons and reflect on my teaching. I truly believe that this rigorous professional development opportunity will help my hone my practices and become a better educator for my students and my school.
