Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Our mission is to prepare students for success in college, leadership, and life. We are a small school of about 500 students. I will be starting my fourth year teaching Advanced Placement (AP) Spanish Language to 11th graders. The purpose of the AP course is to expose students to a rigorous college-level curriculum and to prepare them for the state test that is given once a year in May. If the students pass the exam, most colleges and universities waive the foreign language requirement and some even give college credit, saving our students time and money while they pursue their higher education. One of the activities that the Spanish department consistently practices is journal writing. I have made it a yearly requirement for the students to buy 5-subject notebooks that they keep for the entire year to make their journal entries. I have found from previous experience that these notebooks work best because students do not run out of paper mid-year. Also, they have compartments for note-taking, class work, vocabulary, and grammar practice. Many of our students, however, come from low-income families and therefore find it difficult to either make the trip to a school supply store or have the money to buy these notebooks. The 5-subject notebooks would be kept in the classroom so that I can read their entries. The journal topics range from socially economic disadvantages in our society to family issues such as trust and love. These journals are a springboard for further discussions, in order for my students to get their thoughts together before sharing with their peers or to the entire class. It also serves a secondary function of allowing shy individuals to participate and earn class credit because they have a method of communication that does not put them in the spotlight. I have found that the journals are a great way to get discussions, debates, and lectures started because the pupils have an experience or opinion to share, which serves as a lead way into pieces of literature that we are reading or listening to via radio broadcasts. Your donation would be greatly appreciated and will inspire future writers. They will have a place to write on a daily basis and communicate their thoughts in a safe manner. Their journal entries are insightful to what they go through on a daily basis.
