Students' creative minds: All dressed up and nowhere to go. Most of my students speak English as a second language. I teach 9-11th grade. One of my 10th grade classes, and one of my 11th grade classes are honors classes. My students are, for the most part, inner city students whose parents are either blue collar, or middle class. Many of them are first generation Americans; mostly Asian.

My students are very creative, with a great, unique story to tell. Most of them have experienced changes in their lives that many of us could never fathom. For instance, moving to America, and learning a new language from scratch. Or, living between two broken homes in a neighborhood that provides them little security, and even less support. I believe that these students need a place to put these pent up feelings they have. If they can funnel their feelings through a creative platform, I believe they will be able to release a lot of those feelings. Writing is one of many ways to do this. With these journals, I will encourage the students on a daily basis to tell their stories by offering them journal prompts that are creative, insightful, and allow them to express their emotions and feelings toward their ever changing world.

I will show the students the power of expressing themselves through the written word. Not in "text language," or "email language," but by the act of writing with a pen and scratching out their feelings, letter by letter, on to a piece of good old fashion white paper. The satisfaction my students feel when they write is visible. Their shoulders come down from around their anxious necks, they are more comfortable discussing after they write, and they talk about things like feelings, real life stories and solutions on how to make things better. To teach a student to write in a journal is to give them a justification to express themselves. Journals are like hieroglyphics for them, when they come back a day, two days, a week, a month, a year or ten years later. It becomes a historic document for them, providing a grid for them to look at to chart their growth.

These composition books are a small price to pay for the amount that will come out of them. I feel that, by teaching them how to write in a journal, we will be launching them into a lifelong practice that can act as therapy for them.
