My Students

Let's get up to date! We are in need of an up to date iMac to design our student run newspaper. We are currently working with 10 year old G3s. They have served us well, but it is becoming increasingly impossible to update Internet browsers, software, and general Internet plug-ins.

I teach a diverse group of low-income students in Illinois.

Some are born and raised in Illnois, while many are seeking a new life after leaving their home countries of Sudan, India, Mexico, Pakistan, Congo just to name a few. 95% of the students that attend our school receive free and reduced lunches. My students are hungry for knowledge. The journalism class allows students to become true leaders in our school. Our student body is close to 1200 students, so it is difficult to get information in a streamlined fashion. The student journalists are the link between the known and unknown. They help to bridge the school together, by providing information. Journalism students are challenged to unify the school through thorough investigation, innovative articles, and readable, engaging design.

My Project

Being on the newspaper staff not only builds more aware and responsive students, it also is a experience that students can take with them to college. I want to make their experience as close to real-life as I can. Technology has pushed us into an incredible time. There are free applications all over the Internet, that can assist us. We can easily have an online newspaper, and we have streamlined our editing process by using Google's freeware program, Google Docs. We can even use the most up to date Adobe programs. Unfortunately, we don't have the computers to support these benefits. Our operating systems are too old, and the system won't support a more recent version. Therefore, we need the new technology so I can provide my students with the most up to date technology possible. My hope is that when they go to college, they can actually be ahead of the curve.

A new iMac computer can assist not only the journalism class, but the entire school since information will be more readily available.

Updates to the online newspaper can be daily, because access to a fully-functional computer is easy. Laying out and designing the paper will be faster and more efficient with a machine that runs well and supports Adobe programs, which are the industry standard. Please help these journalism students reach out to the world around them through journalism!
