My Students

To keep students engaged in my American Composition and Literature class, I provide a variety of activities, including warm-up reflections, Grammar Wednesday (can you believe they LOVE this?), reading high level texts, reading their choice books, seminars, essay writing and CREATIVE WRITING!

Our school is a high-poverty.

urban school that is succeeding in educating an incredibly diverse population. Few parents are college-educated, and most have not completed high school. We have a huge percentage of English Language Learners and special needs students. Our school leadership is inspired and inspiring, refusing to allow any of our students to fall through the cracks. We have many wrap-around services, some with community partners. On top of this, I work with incredibly dedicated colleagues who strive constantly to improve teaching strategies and effectiveness. Our school is showing remarkable success, thanks to the hardworking staff and students.

My Project

Because of the traumas that surround poverty (I don't say this lightly -- it is very real), many of my students have more emotional issues than even the average teenager. We all know adolescence is a tumultuous time for almost everyone. In order for students to learn effectively, we have to deal with these issues. One way that has been helpful is through journal writing where kids talk about their lives and issues (on a purely voluntary basis), and I write back to them, developing a dialog that builds our relationship and their confidence. Via their journals, we have intercepted potential suicides, self-cutting, abuse, and depression, along with everyday problems. I am asking for a supply of composition books and pens, so that our kids can continue pouring their hearts out, and becoming stronger people.

I have run out of composition books (originally received from Donors Choose)!

But the students keep coming, needing to express themselves, needing to have the ear of a caring adult, needing to improve the fluidity of their writing. I want to be able to hand every student a journal and a pen, so he or she can reflect upon life, and learn without impediments.
