Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students walk into my classroom and are transported to a Super Mario game. Coin boxes display their writing, Rainbow Road from MarioKart tracks their math facts, and Yoshi hovers over a table. This decor is because I want kids to know that learning, just like Mario games, can be fun and interactive.

The staff at my school voted, and they unanimously agreed I have the best group of children in the whole school.

Other classrooms have students who run out, roll around on the ground, or curse teachers out. After only one week of school, I already feel so lucky to have this group. Yet, surprisingly, they come from some of the hardest backgrounds I've ever heard of. Some of my students have lost both of their parents - through abandonment, incarceration, AND/or death. I have students who are tardy every single day because their parents are too high to wake them up for school. Growing up in an extremely urban area of San Francisco, surrounded by gangs, my students face stressors and pressures I can't imagine facing as a child. But when I'm in front of them, sitting on an exercise ball and bouncing up and down, all I can see is a room full of big personalities that are eager to learn. I want to give them the opportunity to succeed early in life, setting their futures on a better path.

My Project

Many of my students were very well-prepared by the Kindergarten teacher at my school and entered 1st Grade knowing their letter names/sounds. However, some students did not come to my classroom ready for 1st Grade. Some were not developmentally ready for the content, others are brand-new to the school this year. 1st Grade is THE year that students learn to read! Without the knowledge of letter names/sounds, reading is near impossible. My students will use the Jolly Phonics Whiteboard program to learn these letter names & sounds in a fun way, and put them together to make words! The program runs on my computer and projects an image, corresponding to a letter, on the whiteboard. I read the story provided by Jolly Phonics to introduce the letter, or the program can read it to them. We practice saying the sound, listening for it in words, and singing a song from the program to help us remember it. After learning enough letters, we put them together to read words selected by Jolly Phonics.

1st Grade is THE year that students learn to read.

Some of my students are already behind their peers in reading ability because they don't know their letter names and sounds. If a students comes to 1st Grade without knowing their letter names and sounds, they're not prepared to read. This sets them up for failure in the rest of their school career and life. This is my chance to help them catch up, to teach them to read, and to set them up for success in the rest of their school career and life.
