This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine having all these creative ideas and no way to express yourself. My biggest challenge is to turn my students in to life long readers. I want them to love reading and become engaged in the books that they read. We do this by turning the books we read and love into fun projects.

My students are a fantastic group of first through fifth graders.

They are in the gifted program that I teach here at school. I teach them reading, language arts, and social studies. The school where I am at is an inner city, Title One school. Ninety-eight percent of the population is on free and reduced lunch, and all are minorities. These students are so creative and full of ideas; they amaze me daily.

My Project

My students need an iPad and protective case, non-fiction and fiction novels, rug, beanbag chairs, games, classroom supplies (pencils, wipes, pens, crayons, pencil sharpener, glue, etc.) and different arts and crafts materials (paint, wiggle eyes, yarn, etc.). These resources would mean so much to us. The students love turning the stories and books that we read into fun presentations and projects. The arts and craft supplies would really allow us to do that. They could make puppets, dioramas, or really anything that they could think of. The iPad would let them use technology in the class; there are so many programs online they could use, or even take the video and act out different scenes from books. I also asked for some supplies to help us build up our classroom library. We need new novels, beanbags, a rug, and magazines. This will really help make reading a focus in this room.

These donations will make a huge impact on the lives of my students.

It will make school a place that is fun and somewhere that they enjoy going. Learning will be engaging and I've found when I tie a project to the books and stories that they read, they never forget these. My students don't have a place where they can really use their creativity and turn their ideas into a reality.
