My Project

My gifted students come with a variety of backgrounds, abilities, and income levels. The vast majority of our children qualify for free lunch, and many of them do not have warm clothing. Our school community closet helps with clothing deficits, but not all students feel comfortable accepting these items. Over the past few years, I have seen students using blankets in other classrooms. Whether sitting in goups at tables or individually on the floor the learning area was calm, quiet, and productive. Students with special needs and sensory issues use blankets to give them the weight, texture, and pressure they need to focus and stay calm.

Beyond their physical benefits, blankets also offer emotional comfort and security.

Feeling warm, safe, and comfortable goes back to infant swaddling as a way to meet physical and psychological needs. It is in our nature to draw within ourselves during moments of stress and anxiety. When we are cold and feeling vulnerable, warmth and pressure from a cozy blanket makes us feel secure and safe. Many young children have a favorite blanket or stuffed animal that they carry with them everywhere. It helps them transition from the unfamiliar to the familiar. During challenging assignments, physical comfort helps a student become relaxed enough to think, reason, and interpret information. Reading, writing and problem solving become easier. My goal is for each student to have access to a blanket of their choice while in their daily Spotlight class as they work toward positive outcomes and create meaningful projects. Please help me create my own Blanket Brigade!
