My Project

Our students will develop job readiness skills and the joy of gardening. Students can practice locomotor skills as they travel from the classroom into the school yard. They will carry tools and supplies outside to the butterfly garden while practicing object control skills. As the garden flourishes throughout the spring semester and summer school, students will learn responsibility as it pertains to their individual and team job roles. Planning a garden, planting flowers, caring for the garden, and watching plants grow as a result to their hard work will give them a sense of purpose and responsibility. As students care for the grown butterfly plants they will also gain stronger gross motor and fine motor skills. The time outdoor in our schoolyard and the sensory experience of gardening contributes to the improvement of physical fitness, health, mood, and cognition. The butterfly garden will also instill patience and persistence while caring for a tiny seed as it grows into a large plant. The development of all these skills through the butterfly garden will promote students' independence and job readiness.
