Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This year my middle school of nearly 1800 students decided to take part in a One Book, One School event. English teachers signed on to read New Kid in their classes and discuss such topics as microaggressions, biases, and what it's like to just be a kid trying to fit in.

Their willingness to read and teach a graphic novel also shows students that ALL reading is valuable, not just the usual classics.

As a culminating event for both Black History Month and all students reading the same book, we would like to have Jerry Craft do a virtual visit for our students and teachers. A special schedule for the day has been created in order to allow for every student to Zoom in to the virtual visit.

We are also acknowledging the contributions of African Americans to children's literature, a group not as often celebrated or assigned in school. Our students should learn about different experiences and cultures in order to gain a better understanding of their communities and the outside world.

Jerry Craft is the first author-illustrator to receive the Newbery Award for a graphic novel. In addition, he won the Coretta Scott King Award, and was on the NYT bestseller list.

We are so excited to be able to have Craft do a visit to our school!
