Our students are full of life, eager to learn and curious about life in Minnesota outside of the classroom. Many of the fifth-grade students at our school have experienced serious trauma, are learning English as their second or third language and are living in neighborhoods that limit their chances to play outside and learn about the outdoors.
This project will also allow our immigrant students to get to know their new home, Minnesota, by getting outside and exploring all of the natural beauty and resources it has to offer!
Children need the opportunity to learn and grow through play and hands-on experiences and these students are often unable to participate in these activities due to neighborhood safety and high cost.
Funding this trip would allow a beautiful, diverse group of 5th graders to explore the outdoors in the Twin Cities before they move forward to middle school.
My Project
This trip will allow our students to explore the local Minneapolis environment right in their backyards with Wilderness Inquiry. Many of our students do not have the funds or live in neighborhoods where this is possible to do outside of school. Students will spend a day on canoeing on our Minneapolis Chain of Lakes to learn about the local environment and the water cycle. They will also learn about how our landforms and natural resources impact Minnesota history. This trip will instill a love of the natural world and life sciences and give them a chance to explore the environment around them!
