Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach music at a two year old high performing, low income college prep charter high school. For music classes we offer two bands, choir, and two intro to music courses, as well as a rock band. Each student here at our school will be the first of their family to attend and graduate college. Our students are very hard working and don't always have the resources at home that they need to succeed. We pride ourselves in our drive to "Be the Change".

We have a great Latin Jazz Ensemble here at our school. We are in dire need of a performance level drum set, some guitar strings to keep our guitars in playable shape, saxophone reeds, a samba whistle and a guiro. Every student here at our school has one of my music classes throughout the day. We are lacking in our percussion instruments and need some supplies in order to achieve our musical goals. The kids do excellent work and need to use equipment that will show off their wonderful talents.

We need these instruments to help our Latin Jazz Ensemble and our guitarists achieve the high level of creativity and achievement that they are capable of. Many of our students have what it takes to become great musical performers and music teachers one day, and they deserve a chance to understand how quality instruments can add so much to their skill as well as teach them responsibility for those instruments. Through music our students are realizing how music can improve their critical thinking skills and teach them life lessons, like working together to achieve something bigger. Music can uplift and heal the soul. In the California standard 2.4 (Creative Expression) it states that students will perform on instruments of various genres, styles, and cultures with expression, technical accuracy, tone quality, articulation by oneself and with ensembles. Having the instruments I have selected will with no doubt allow for great growth in our students' ability to achieve this standard and many more. It will in turn teach them lessons that they will take with them into the rest of their schooling and then on into the rest of their lives.

With your help, our students can have instruments at our school that will add so much to our music program. Our students deserve to know what they are capable of, and with the addition of these necessities they will. Most of our students do not own their own instruments and our budget cannot supply them with everything we need to have a successful music program. With your help, our students can be given the tools that can prepare them to be successful musicians and students in high school, college and in life. Please help! Thank you.
