Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are currently engaged in a class reading of E.B. White's "Charlotte's Web" and absolutely LOVE sharing the book with their classmates. To read a chapter book as a whole class is a wonderful experience, and my kids are begging me to find another book to enjoy together!

Third graders in a New York public school who go home to houses, apartments or shelters that have no books.

This high-achieving third grade class in an extremely low-income community is made up of students who want to do well and want to learn as much as they can, but struggle to find the resources to do so.

My Project

Reading a book with one's classmates is a great opportunity! It gives every student the chance to share in a discussion about the same story, to chat about what's going on in the book during lunch, and to help each other understand complicated details. This is an experience students definitely have during middle and high school, so it will only benefit them to have this exposure in elementary school. As I child, I remember reading Roald Dahl's "James and the Giant Peach," with my classmates, and absolutely LOVED it! I recently recommended this book to a few of my students, and they came back with raving reviews. This is an exciting book that many children are interested to read and I would love to have the opportunity to share it with every one of my students. Also, having an audiobook copy will allow me to run a listening center where students can hear accurate modeling of the text being read aloud and re-read on their own.

By the end of third grade, you will ensure that these students have far exceeded grade-level expectations! This children's book is just what my students need to succeed!
