Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Ice Cream treats are always fun and I would love to create an interactive learning experience during our Caribbean unit study in June, focusing on ice cream from Jamaica. As part of this hands-on activity, I would like to provide my students with autism the opportunity to create and enjoy tropical fruit flavored ice cream using a premade mixture, flavored extract and add-ons using the ice cream machines we already have. The ice cream will be served in waffle bowls that they make themselves using a mixture and waffle bowl machine. There will also be a gluten free cone option for full inclusivity.

Making mango and guava cheesecake flavored ice cream will not only immerse students in the culture and traditions of Jamaica but also help foster social skills and teamwork as they work together to make and serve this delicious treat to one another.

Through this interactive project, students will practice following directions, taking turns, and enhancing fine motor skills while engaging in a fun and educational experience. Students will have the opportunity to try a few popular ice cream flavors and rate which one they liked best. Ultimately, making these delicious frozen treats will serve as fruitful language, social, and sensory activity that provides a meaningful connection to the cultural study of Jamaica and understanding of desserts from the Caribbean.
