My Students

The fifth grade students at our urban, public school are an eager group of young scholars working in a low-income area (Title I school). They are hard-working, enthusiastic, inquisitive students from a diverse array of backgrounds and cultures. They represent much of the best qualities of our country.

Our students come from a working class neighborhood located in one of our nation's largest school districts.

Often, our school struggles with funding issues to provide the best possible learning opportunities for our students. We have a very supportive parent community, each one striving to provide their children a quality education.

I am very proud of each student and plan to enhance their education by providing them with a powerful new novel that teaches a timeless message in an entertaining manner. In addition, we will be arranging school visits from the book's authors. This experience will provide inspiration for our students as they develop their reading and writing skills.

My Project

We hope to purchase a class set of the amazing new novel, "Jaclyn Hyde," to be shared by all three fifth grade classes at our school. This humorous and exciting novel will enthrall students by immersing them in a unique retelling of a classic tale, "bubbling over with secret potions, great plot twists, and life-saving friendships."

This novel shares a timeless message - that nobody's perfect - or needs to be with our students.

This empowering idea helps liberate youngsters from the often paralyzing role of "expectations." Instead of comparing themselves to some abstract standard, reading "Jaclyn Hyde" teaches students that the key to leading a successful life entails doing your personal best...being true to your own beliefs, being a good friend, attempting to understand others, being inquisitive, and not giving up - especially when times get tough.

In addition to reading this novel, students will be answering questions based upon the Common Core State Standards and writing a multi-paragraph letter to the authors. In addition, we will be using this novel as the basis for a student-led stage play to be developed in an after school enrichment class. Finally, the authors - Connor White and Annabeth Bondor-Stone - have agreed to visit our school to do a presentation for our students, as well as attend their student-led stage play!

This entire experience will provide intrinsic motivation for students to develop their reading and writing skills. It will also build self-esteem, strengthen their sense of identity, and address mental health issues created by youngsters feeling overburdened by the stress of perfect expectations....They will learn to exchange the wings of unreal dreams, for the wheels of achievable dreams (Thank you, Bruce Springsteen!)
