This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Music changes lives. Every student should be given the opportunity to experience music and to make it first hand. Playing instruments is a great way to engage students with music making. Some of the most exciting classes involve full participation by the entire classroom.

Elementary School come from low income households. They are very excited to come to the music room and make music as a class. These students get to play instruments and sing songs from around the world. When the students have the opportunity to play instruments they begin to glow with excitement.

My Project

The opportunity for the students to experience Boomwackers will be great. Having a complete set in the classroom will allow for all the students to participate in the day's lesson. They will get to create original rhythms and melodies using the instruments. They will improvise and begin to compose original tunes that will be featured during the school concerts. This set of simple instruments along with some mallets to play the instruments will bring each class a real sense of community and ensemble. Donating will also provide for a chromatic bell set which will enable any class to play accompaniments from songs in any key. This will be of great help in playing instruments with current songs in the classroom. I recently was able to try out a starter set of boomwackers in the classroom and was immediately surprised to see how quickly the students of all ages took to playing them. They do not require any special tuning or upkeep, instead they will provide instruments for years.

I have found that students who have an instrument in their hands can experience music first hand.

They can move their bodies and open their minds to the creative side of making music. These instruments will allow for all the students in each class to participate and be a part of the entire class instruction.
