My Project

I am a first grade teacher in Staten Island New York. My students come from a diverse set of backgrounds. In my classroom and throughout my school we have created a warm environment for migrant students as well as zoned students.

I would love to create a cozy corner that creates an environment despite of cultural differences.

I would love to create a space that is inviting for my students to express themselves and identify their emotions so they can emotionally articulate how they feel in more than one way.

For many immigrant students, immigration issues may be affecting their social emotional health. It is also my goal to ensure the school year is filled with an inviting, warm, welcoming classroom environment full of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) support.

In my experience, once the students are able to identify a safe space to express themselves, their learning and emotional growth is amplified. With materials like weighted monkey, STEM magnet toys, sensory toys, and fidget items, the students and I will create a list of how, when, and why we access our cozy corner.

We will also create a class charter to support our emotions throughout the school year, while building fundamental skills for our education. We are requesting borders, multi-sensory tools and tangibles to create an inviting atmosphere. We are a part of a multicultural Equity Focus School motivated to succeed despite our economical challenges.
