My Students

We are a community-oriented middle school in Brooklyn, NY that strives to go beyond academics and meet all the needs of our students. Many of our students are in temporary housing or living in homes where they are doubled up with multiple other family members. I teach four 6th grade math classes at our wonderful school. Two of my classes are ICT classes which means some of the students have IEPs to address learning disabilities, occupational therapy needs and more. My class consists of students whose families originally signed up for Blended Learning so they could benefit from working in the classroom. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic they are all now working remotely.

For my students Remote Learning provides unique challenges because many don't have the space to set up an adequate work station.

Additionally, for students with disabilities, working virtually as opposed to in a classroom with hands-on opportunities can be challenging. My goal is to help them overcome the unexpected obstacles that Remote Learning has placed in their path.

So many are eager to learn, however, they are discouraged because they struggle working virtually.

My Project

My project attempts to address two issues my students have had in remote learning. The first, affects the students in all their classes- lack of a workstation. Many students are working in shared bedrooms, on couches, in living rooms with multiple siblings, etc. Therefore, a traditional desk is not an option. Having lap desks however, would help them as complete their lessons.

The second issue is more specific to my subject: math.

In math seeing students' work as they go through each step is crucial. Currently, we have been using interactive slides and whiteboards as they work remotely that allow me to follow along with them. Unfortunately many students struggle with writing on the ipads provided by the schools. Having a stylus would make it much easier to complete lessons. It would be especially useful for my students' who have occupational therapy needs, but all could benefit because so many have said they struggle with writing out equations and drawing diagrams on their screens. For visual learners, this is also important because typing letters and numbers may not be the best way to show their thinking, but drawing with a stylus could reduce frustration when they are trying to represent their solution strategies.

My goal is to help students overcome those obstacles which we can control while trying to manage in a pandemic that we can't.
