This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This year, I will be teaching 3rd grade for the first time. My students for this upcoming year are Second Language Learners and I am planning on incorporating many techniques to ensure they get the support they need. This includes small-group interventions, and leveled texts. Many of my students do not have appropriate books to read at home, which is affecting their growth in reading. Being at an inner-city school, these students may not always have all of the necessary resources or opportunities, but they work together as a class to make the best with what they are given. As their teacher, I am working to create a safe and engaging environment to help these students see the perks of education.
I am eager to help these students progress with their reading and bring them closer to grade-level.
As I will be teaching English Language Learners, having engaging lessons is important to help them with the classwork. I would like to create a classroom environment where students' creativity is encouraged and their voices and opinions are heard and considered.
My Project
I am asking for a year-long subscription for TIME Magazine for Kids for each of my students. Every week, these students will get a magazine with various articles and activities. I have been researching ways for my students to gain information to real-world news that is appropriate for their age and this magazine is absolutely perfect! With TIME Magazine, the students are given the opportunity to learn about the world in a way that they can understand. The magazines also incorporate Science and History, which are subjects that are not always consistently taught every day.
I would use these magazines as a morning activity during the time our students have Breakfast in the Classroom.
Every morning, students are given 30 minutes to have breakfast and do classwork. I want an activity that is not too challenging so that each student can get their brain working before the day begins. The students I will be having are all at varying levels of reading. Magazines offer differentiation within each article and will allow every student to participate. For the students who may not like reading, magazines offer short stories which are less overwhelming than a chapter book but are still at a reading level appropriate for their age. Each story also comes with an activity that allows the students to think and apply what they just read. The subscription also allows the students to access more information online and gives me, the teacher, access to activities that can be tied into everyday lessons once they've read the articles.
