Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a first year teacher, my students understand the strength it takes to overcome poverty and obtain the proper education to make their families and themselves proud. Being in 8th grade, this is the year they overcome one final hurdle in preparation for high school!

My students are 8th grade Special Education.

Due to my young age and similar background, they relate to me and trust when I say that I know what it's like to have to overcome such overwhelming obstacles to obtain a better education. My school is located in a low income community; henceforth why it's also a Title I school. Graduation rates remain low; however, my students know that I will do whatever it takes in my first year of teaching to ensure that they get the most out of their education. Because supplies are scarce, I have very limited quantities of books and technology, no printer and no speakers. When videos must be shown, we gather around in a circle around my laptop. Furthermore, my students are very enthusiastic about reading as they are constantly asking what stories I'm going to be introducing to them. I'd love to surprise them with brand new books; something they're not accustomed to.

My Project

My students need class sets of books including Of Mice & Men, Animal Farm, and Enrique's Journey. They will be utilizing the requested books both in and outside the classroom. They'll be able to follow along with certain audiobooks to help them better comprehend the text using speakers. I'm especially excited about having them read "Enrique's Journey" as many students are first generation Americans whose parents emigrated to the United States in search of a better life and future, much like Enrique's mother in the book. Because many students are far below grade level, these stories will help bring better awareness to literature and its impact. The students will especially have the opportunity to learn the rigor and feasibility of grade level text.

All of my students come from low income backgrounds and don't all share a passion or love for literature.

This project will allow them to enjoy brand new books and become invested in reading material that will better prepare them for more rigorous texts at the next level in high school. By doing so, they will be able to read, discuss, analyze, and ultimately comprehend literature that will give them better preparation and confidence entering high school in the fall.
