My Students

There are two words that accurately describe our classroom: ORGANIZED CHAOS!

Our school is home to about 300 students in a high poverty, inner city neighborhood.

Our school is highly mobile with almost 20% of our students experiencing homelessness. Despite the challenges that our students face, they are incredibly resilient. The students that learn in my classroom all have low incidence disabilities such as Autism Spectrum Disorders, Intellectual Disabilities, and Down Syndrome. Their vivacious personalities, zest for life, and boldness are a huge part of our school culture. They do not let developmental delays or poverty get in the way of their learning. I truly LOVE my job as their teacher and cannot imagine teaching a different group of children.

My Project

The materials we are requesting are called Time Timers. They are visual timers that work wonders for my students! We have one, and already know that we need a few more to stay on track. A "Time Timer" has a red disk that disappears as time elapses which gives students a visual representation of elapsed time, a concrete way to know how much time is left, and an additional auditory cue ("ding!") when time is up. These timers are used for our daily center rotations, to help students transition out of preferred activities (like blocks, iPad, and computer!), and to help teach the concept of time when our students are ready. The timers we have requested are in a variety of sizes so they can be carried throughout the school and used in classes like PE, art, and technology.

My students need structure and concrete prompts to help them transition across the school day.
