My Students

For 2014, one of my New Year's resolutions for my second graders is to ignite sparks of a healthy ritual during recess time and during physical education period. I don't want to see my wandering second graders getting in trouble during playtime simply because they're bored!

I work with energetic and motivated second graders who would love to be engaged in physical activities such as tossing, bouncing, and catching balls, jumping ropes and reciting jump rope rhymes if the school has the fund to provide such materials.

Our inner city school is located in the heart of an extremely diverse community. We are a Title 1 school and 100% of our students are on the federal free meal plan. Many students arrive to school at 7:00a.m. and stay after school until 6:00p.m. Our school is their home away from home sanctuary.

My Project

The requested materials will tremendously improve my students' playtime in many positive ways. I feel that my second graders deserve to have both fun and physical activities to do at recess. It is their basic right since they've been cooped up in the classroom from 8:00 to 10:00, emerging in reading and writing during the language arts block. Their 20 minutes of recess should not be a boring time because it's their playtime. Research shows that positive experiences with physical activities set the stage for students to be engaged and focused in academic areas. My goal is to provide the materials and show my students and the students of my peers to participate in these physical activities before and after school as well. Once my students have learned to play the games, the fun games don't just confine to my own students. It is also my hope these fun engaging games will help my students build friendships, and at the same time, develop a healthy lifestyle that will last a lifetime.

The requested materials: two bounce and play hand trampolines, two toss and catch play-sets, and two swivel jump ropes will be a vital project in turning my students' boring playtime into a fun and exciting one.
