My students are from a low income community in rural Oregon. In our community, there are not many opportunities for local employment. The goal of improving our program is to provide equipment and experience that will allow our students to graduate from our program with marketable industry skills.
Many of our students will be on an alternative track from college and are seeking options like trade schools, apprenticeships, and vocational training.
Due to my extensive experience in CNC manufacturing, and nursery work I am uniquely blessed to provide guidance and training for these students.
My Project
Our shop space is in need of a tabletop drill press for our wood working area. Our space currently shares a single large floor stand drill press with both our wood working and metal working spaces. The shared nature of the drill press has caused problems with oil and lubricants used for metal working leaving marks and damaging the finish on fine wood working projects.
Having a dedicated drill press for our wood working area will allow us to build ornate and precise woodcraft projects without fear of damage.
Projects such as wooden clocks, door harps, small cabinets and jewelry boxes all require small precise holes to be drilled in them. Having a drill press that is free from oil and coolant is key to being able to complete these projects with high quality finishes like lacquer or varnish.
