Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach Fourth Grade CTT, Collaborative Team Teaching, in Bushwick, Brooklyn. My class is a mix of special education and general education students.

Many children, and even adults, do not know anything about our Nation's history, the location of our state, what is going on in the world around them, or even something as simple as the three states of matter. This is because Science and Social Studies (which includes current events), two very important subjects for the development of children, is being sacrificed. I am one of those people who believe that Science and Social Studies should not be left out of a child's education.

I have 19 students in my classroom. I was wondering if it would be possible to have 19 subscriptions of Time for Kids sent to our classroom. With Time for Kids, our students will be able to improve their reading comprehension skills, fluency, and improve vocabulary and decoding skills, while learning about new and exciting things in the fields of Science and Social Studies.

If given the chance to have 19 subscriptions of Time for Kids sent to my classroom, I could, and would, implement the two very important subjects into the Reading and Writing curriculum. My students could learn all about the importance of recycling; and then write about why we need to do it. By reading these magazines, my students will also learn, first hand, the difference between primary and secondary sources. I was wondering if you could help give my class the opportunity to learn. Is it possible to send us 19 subscriptions of Time for Kids? With this type of literature, my students will be given the opportunity to learn Science and Social Studies, while improving their reading abilities. These children are our future, but without the proper materials, where will they stand ten years from now?
