Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My colleague Mr. Boxer and I teach general music to nearly all 1,230 students in our Pre-K through 8th grade school. Our program focuses on music literacy, improvisation, composing, songwriting, singing, movement, ukulele, recorder, keyboards, and drumming.

Our wonderfully talented, enthusiastic, and hard-working children are very passionate about music and look forward to their weekly classes.

In addition to our general music program, we have a vibrant elementary and middle school chorus which performs for our school community and throughout New York City. We are especially proud of hosting the Queens County Choral Festival at Queens College and the movie “Rise Up and Sing—The Movie” which featured our middle school chorus.

One of the greatest opportunities for our school came three years ago when we were accepted into the Disney Musical in Schools program. Since then we have given over 150 3rd - 5th grade students the experience of putting on a fully-produced musical theater performance.

My Project

Our school auditorium is used daily for rehearsals, concerts, and assemblies. This is a warm and inviting space where students get to express themselves through music and theater, and fully experience the joys of performing.

Sadly, the piano in our auditorium is no longer usable—it has many mechanical issues and cannot be tuned.

The generous people at Frank and Camille’s Pianos have offered to sell us a beautiful used Petrof upright piano at a deeply discounted price.

If our project is funded, this incredible instrument will be used to accompany students for rehearsals and performance. We also have many children who are excelling in their keyboard studies and would love to practice and perform on a real piano.

Please consider that this addition to our school would benefit students for generations to come!
