My Project

As a 5th-grade science teacher, I am writing to request funding for a raised garden bed, garden supplies, and a rain barrel to help build an outdoor garden.

With this garden, we will be able to incorporate hands-on learning experiences aligned with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) into our curriculum to support our students’ understanding of science, as well as promote overall well-being for students who suffered and are still suffering from challenges faced during the pandemic.

From fostering a sense of community, to encouraging healthy eating habits...

Our goal is to use a raised garden bed to provide a learning environment that allows students to explore and investigate the natural world around them.

Specifically, this project aims to:

- Provide a hands-on learning experience by allowing students to design, plant, and care for the raised garden bed.

- Make connections between Social Studies, Language Arts, and Math concepts, such as planting native plants to learn about indigenous peoples and their uses of plants, reading and writing about scientific observations made in the garden, and studying bar graphs of rainfall data to see how our garden and rain barrel contribute to water conservation efforts.

- Align with NGSS science standards, such as understanding food chains and webs, thinking about energy flows of gardening systems, the interdependence of systems in human activities, and the importance of Earth’s resources.

Students will gain a deeper understanding of science by using the garden bed as a way to put concepts into practice, engage in critical thinking, and develop problem-solving skills. In the end, their mental and physical well being, will benefit greatly .
