I teach chemistry in a public high school in an area of high poverty. My students come to my class to learn, to problem solve, to ask questions, and to escape from the day-to-day pressure that waits for them outside of my classroom walls.
My goal is to get all of my students to see themselves as a scientist and to redefine what a scientist looks like and does.
These kids work hard every day, they work for good grades, they work for money to help support their families, they give their all to a team sport or a club. Many of them are pessimists, many have given up on pursuing post-secondary education, many came into my class saying that they were bad at science and they wouldn't pass my class. Almost half-way through the school year and 92% of my students are passing, I have seen a change in study habits, they come into class smiling, and one is even starting to apply to colleges.
I want to continue to make my classroom a place for creativity, thinking outside the box, and hands-on learning. My students thrive because I believe in them, I hope you will to
My Project
Chemistry is an incredibly hands-on and tactile subject. Without visualization aids, the course itself would not truly be teaching students. This giant molecule set will allow my students to really see what is happening with the smallest particles in the known universe.
Atoms are so small that humans cannot even comprehend their size if they cannot visualize them how can they learn about them?
This model set will help high-schoolers learn about molecular bonding and the shapes that atoms come together to create. This knowledge and true comprehension will allow my students to have access to information throughout the year in my course and even outside my classroom.
More than half of students from low‑income households
