My Students

I work at an elementary school in an artistically-minded, diverse section of Brooklyn. All of my students receive free school lunch. I am thrilled to be teaching a "Farm-to-Table" class this year, and I am trying to put all the pieces together to make it all really work!

I see 17 different classes a week, ranging from pre-k through 5th grade.

I have many lesson plans and ideas ready to go, but I am lacking the basic materials to make it happen. I have made art projects, poems, and activity sheets, but I don't even have enough paper to make copies for all of my students. Public schools do not provide teachers with paper - it is up to teachers to buy/get the paper that they need. This becomes quite expensive when you have multiple classes.

My Project

With the materials I have requested, students will make food and health related art projects, poems, recipes, and lots of other fun stuff! We will make projects with recycled materials. We plan to save all of the finished glue sticks in order to make a project out of them, to make kids aware of all of the waste in using some items. Glue is too unwieldy for small children to use, so schools end up using lots of glue sticks, which unfortunately are very wasteful.

Since this "Farm to Table" class is new, I want to do everything possible to really take off.

Kids are excited to try new foods, work in the garden, and to learn about things that they can do to better their health, and the health of the Earth. When I see kids getting angry about trash and cigarettes on the ground I know that I have done my job! Your donation will be helping young people to learn how to take care of themselves, as well as the environment, and what is more important than that
