My Students

Somehow, the 21st century snuck up on our school in Brooklyn, NY! For 12 eager and technologically savvy special-needs students, one classroom computer isn't cutting it. The wealth of apps from literacy to grade tracking means each of my students will be supported and engaged in their learning.

My students are 7th-8th graders with intellectual and emotional disabilities and autism in a 12:1:1 self-contained, alternately-assessed class in Brooklyn, NY.

Over 90% of the school receives free lunch. Several of my students are English Language Learners. Academic abilities range from pre-K level to 8th grade in both reading and math. My class is very socially high functioning and VERY energetic. As middle school students, they are keenly aware of peer opinions and enjoy working cooperatively. They are eager to learn and participate readily in class activities, especially those that allow for movement. They love jokes and stories and tracking their own progress. They enjoy books and LOVE technology. In our classroom, we have only 1 fully functional computer to use with 12 students. We often struggle to find time for everyone to practice research and writing skills, let alone to enjoy the millions of educational games and programs available these days.

My Project

My project is to support and enhance my students' learning through technology with 2 tablets. Sharing one computer among 12 kids has meant that each student gets only about 5 minutes of computer time a day. This is not enough time to engage in a meaningful way with most programs, and it is certainly not enough time to conduct any kind of research. The tablets, in addition to the classroom computer, will allow for small groups to explore various apps and websites that have been developed to target the specific skills my students need to succeed academically and socially. The tablets can be used in literacy centers for additional practice on explicit reading and writing strategies. They can be used for math drills and for quick, formative assessments on a range of topics. In addition to direct instructional benefits, I will be able to keep student data at my fingertips and generate reports that can be sent to parents on a weekly basis.

As a school exclusively for students with special needs, technology can be an especially beneficial tool for reaching those who learn best by nontraditional methods.

By donating to our technological revolution, you will be bringing those innovations (in tablet form) into our classroom and helping my students access materials in new and exciting ways. Please help us step into the 21st century!
