My Students

Consider The Following: Reading a science textbook, but not being able to see what it was describing, or watching a video of a grey volcano erupt or a sickly green flower blossom. This is the reality in our science classroom. We need Bill Nye's help and a projector that will show his true colors!

Our Title One school is located in North Philadelphia, PA.

Our students' families have difficulty affording uniforms for their students, let alone donations for new school supplies. My students not only seek out academic support, but emotional support as well. We are not only their teachers, but we also play the role of parent, mentor, counselor, and nurse, as our students sometimes have no one else to turn to. Although their lives outside of our four walls asks of them to act as adults with too much weight on their shoulders, within our walls they are still kids. They do not have the resources that many other schools have and it is difficult to keep simple supplies available (pencils, paper, etc). Our budget has been cut drastically, therefore big ticket items are out of the question. Fund raising efforts go towards field trips to allow our student to experience places outside of the classroom. Not much is left from anyone for major expenses.

My Project

BIll Nye's DVDs offer a fast-paced, in your face, goofy style of science. He matches my students' personalities perfectly! I have shown quick snippets of his videos and they have inspired in-depth discussions in class. They refer back to him often as we work through the units and sing the song constantly! I can only imagine what more options can inspire with my students. His videos will serve as a launch pad for new units, inspiring my students to explore further.

Science needs to be experienced: touch, smell, sound, and especially sight.

WIth our current projector, the only thing that looks good is a zebra. Interactive lessons involving color are not an option as we cannot tell the difference between green and blue on the screen. Bill Nye's videos will come even more alive! I foresee Bill Nye viewing parties with our science buddies (1st & 2nd grade), enhancing their science curriculum as well! Please help us see science as it is meant to be seen!
